CUSTOM PUBLISHING

How it works Ordering Order Form

If no single book or combination of books gives you the range of course materials you want your students to have, UTP on campus offers a CUSTOM PUBLISHING service. Custom published course packs can contain almost any selection of articles, book chapters, lab manuals, lecture notes, syllabi, and so on. You are able to use the latest literature in your field, as well as out-of-print classics, and your students will have everything they need in one convenient, high- quality package.

We do all the work and spare you the headaches. We clear all copyright permissions. We print and bind, and sell the packages in the textbook department of your U of T campus bookstore. And all at no cost to you and at reasonable prices to the student: we operate on a cost- recovery basis to keep prices low.

How Custom Publishing Works

Simply give us a good-quality original or copy of each item you'd like to include in your customized course package, accompanied by full bibliographic information: author, title of selection, title of source, page numbers you're using, total page numbers in the entire book or journal issue, publisher, date of publication, and ISBN or ISSN. Let us know the enrollment for your course, whether the package is required or recommended reading, whether you require complimentary copies for yourself or any teaching assistants, and the date when you'll need the package. That's all we need to start the custom publishing process (see the end of this document for some useful tips on ordering custom published course packages). When we're finished, we'll return your originals to you. We'll keep a master copy here in order to reprint on demand.

Permissions for custom publishing are granted on a one-time use basis only. Each term, we must apply for permission again, even if a package is identical to one previously used. We must also renegotiate permissions that may have been granted to a professor -- all permissions must be granted directly to the Bookstore. As a rule of thumb, be aware that in most cases no more than 15% of a single book or journal issue can be reproduced unless the volume is out of print. Many permissions can be cleared quickly through central bodies such as CANCOPY, but some may have to be granted in writing from the original publisher. This can take anywhere from one to eight weeks, so order early!

Ordering

For more information, or to order, call Custom Publishing at (416) 640-5333 or e-mail . Let us know your name, phone number, course code, enrollment, and whether the course packages will be required or recommended reading. Or, download a copy of our order form here, and fax it to us at (416) 640-5188 . We'll produce complimentary copies of your package for you and any teaching assistants if you let us know how many you'll need when you place your order (the cost is absorbed by the price of the students' copies). Provide us with your bibliography and originals, and you're on your way.

Order early. We must allow sufficient time to clear permissions with publishers, usually six to eight weeks. Each term, we establish and publicize a deadline for bibliographies and originals to be received in our office in order for the finished packages to be on the shelves for the first week of new classes. We will certainly accept orders after the deadline, but unfortunately we can't guarantee that they'll be ready for your first class session.

Requesting Custom Publishing Packages:

  • Order early. Most publishers request a 6-8 week processing period for permissions requests if we must deal with them directly.
  • Provide the best quality originals possible -- ideally the original books or journals. The custom publishing process produces a final product that is 2-3 generations removed from whatever you give us.
  • Provide complete bibliographic information for each item. The custom publishing process requires more information than standard citations, including, wherever possible, ISBN or ISSN, total page count for the entire source book or journal issue, and publisher for both journals and books.
